As a licensed social worker I’ve worked with many people that struggle with addictions to alcohol, drugs and combinations of them.   Drug addiction and alcoholism are complicated conditions. Period.  Many people become so dependent on a behavior or a substance that they no longer see how to abstain from it.  They lose perspective and a sense of other priorities in their lives.

Do you feel trapped in a life of pain, unhappiness, and addiction?

In this report, I've interviewed best-selling authors including Todd Zalkins, Dennis Marcellino, Amy Lee Coy and Patty Holloran who each have their unique and inspiring story of addiction and recovery. You'll also get to read an artist's journey, Parker Lanier, who hit bottom and was able to turn his life around. Different approaches were used and as a therapist I know each of us are individuals and cannot only use one approach.

Are you struggling with a drug problem that’s spiraled out of control?

Are you tired of going to great lengths to hide your addiction from your professional and business associates? Or perhaps things have really deteriorated and your career and family life have fallen apart.

Have you struggled with finding happiness, true purpose and meaning in your life?

People become dependent on drugs and alcohol for many reasons, every person has their own story and their own road that took them there. One common thread most people share when they become dependent on alcohol and drugs is the emotional and physical affects dependency causes. No matter what the reasons are or how long it took to get there, addiction affects self-esteem, relationships and eventually every aspect of your life.

Every individual has their own reasons for becoming dependent on alcohol, drugs, and sometimes both, and every person has to find their own solution or path to recovery. There are many paths to recovery; it's important that every person finds the path that's right for them. When this happens life becomes bearable again, self-esteem increases, relationships can heal, and a person's quality of life improves.

As a counselor, I've found that many of the turning point moments for my clients were precipitated by either reading or hearing someone’s personal story that was in a similar predicament and was able to overcome it.

In the book Beyond Addiction I share the interviews of five remarkable people who have been generous enough to  share their stories of recovery.

Each has a unique journey and tremendous depth knowing the deepest darkest places we can descend to, as well as the joy of liberation from an enslaving addiction.

There are different approaches and points of view regarding AA, psychotherapy and faith.

I am privileged to share the remarkable true accounts of each individual's journey and their different ways of overcoming temptations and remaining clean or sober.

You'll find a deep honesty in each of their discussions on alcoholism, drugs and pain pill addiction.

In Beyond Addiction you will meet:

Todd author of
Dying for Triplicate: A True Story of Addiction, Survival and Recovery who overcame pain pill addiction. He was told in rehab by the medical director at South Coast Hospital in Laguna Beach, California, “I have worked with and detoxified more than 12,000 patients, and your case is probably the worst I have ever seen.

"In order to be rebuilt I had to tear myself apart."
Todd Zalkins
Dennis author of Addiction Free Forever who was a member of some of the biggest bands of his time. He fell into drug use that was popular for those times, especially in the music industry. A break up found him experiencing a lot of intense emotional pain (even at one point that made him decide to plan his suicide in 1980).

"You can't expect that a person will say no to drugs until they have something better to say YES to."
Dennis Marcellino
Amy author of From Death do I Part: How I Freed Myself From Addiction who suffered twenty years of addiction and journeyed recovery without narcotics anonymous, therapy or the usual methods. Amy had been in rehab treatment programs seven times.

"People should know that if they do not find help in AA and that way of thinking about addiction, they are not doomed.  Not everyone believes AA is a necessary tool toward sobriety."
Amy Lee Coy

Parker is active in working with those in recovery and encouraging artistic expression for change.

“When I stopped drinking, I started drawing and now I can’t stop.”
Parker Lanier

Patty Holloran was a nurse suffering from an addiction to Stadol, a little known painkiller. She kept her addiction a secret from everyone-even from her husband-while stealing from the hospital where she worked, moving on to abuse prescription nasal spray, and later to shooting illicit drugs.

Patty Hollaran is author of A Nurse's Story of Addiction and Recovery

You are probably here reading this because alcoholism or drug addiction has had a major impact on your life

Could This Be Your Situation:

You are presently struggling with an addiction to alcohol or drugs or are in a relationship with an addict or alcoholic

A family member like a mother, father, child, brother, sister you love dearly is suffering from an addiction

You’ve gone through the tragic experience of losing someone you love to their addiction

I don’t work for a rehab center, so am able to remain objective and not push one point of view over another.

I work at a mental health clinic and have seen that different approaches work for different personalities.

I have always been interested both personally and as a therapist with what it takes to really change and let go of certain patterns. When there is a physical addiction in addition to the psychological addiction this is even more challenging. I chose the people in Beyond Addiction because they don't hold anything back. They have faced some very dark moments in their lives and have very different approaches in their breakthroughs. A genuine quality will shine through in each account.

If you feel stuck, are in recovery yourself or are a family member or friend, you can draw strength and wisdom from each of the stories in Beyond Addiction.

“It seems that the ancient Medicine Men understood that listening to another’s story somehow gives us the strength of example to carry on, as well as showing us aspects of ourselves we can’t easily see.  For listening to the stories of others…is a kind of water that breaks the fever of our isolation.  If we listen closely enough, we are soothed into remembering our common name.”  Mark Nepo
